How did I come into birth work?

As a child I always would tell my mother I wanted to be a children’s doctor because I didn’t want to work with adults. I never made it to be a child’s physician but I was a nanny for over ten years caring for mostly newborns and toddlers. Through these years of childcare and being a parents helper I found myself intuitively moving with ease. Children have always fed me and brought me back to remember how simple and precious life is and can be. Being a doula for my community of queer, black and brown families is my way of forever being Tia Pao.

Decolonizing our birth experience and reclaiming our ancestral rituals is the most important to me as a birth worker. It is an honor to be chosen by these star beings to help usher their life into planet Earth. My hope is to be like a cousin, auntie, sister to your journey as this is equally a transformation for the parent(s) to be. Throughout our time together I always center the spirit of the baby and its ancestors to bring forth their highest good.

What is my role as a doula?

As a birth doula, I accompany pregnant people in labor to help ensure a safe and satisfying birthing experience. I draw on my professional training, knowledge and experiences to provide physical, emotional, and informational support to the parent and birth team. I provide reassurance and perspective to you, make suggestions for labor progress, and help with relaxation, massage, positioning, and other techniques for comfort. I am independent and self-employed. As your doula, I am working with you, not your caregiver or the facility where you give birth.

As a doula, I do not:

Perform clinical tasks, such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks, vaginal exams, etc. I am there to provide only physical comfort, emotional, and informational support. I will help you get the information necessary to make an informed decision. I will also remind you if there is a departure from your Birth Plan. I will discuss any concerns with you and suggest options, but you or your partner will speak directly to the clinical staff.
